Muenster sits about 9 kilometres east of Humboldt on Highway 5, and its story is closely tied to St. Peter's Abbey. The abbey began in 1903 with the arrival of seven Benedictine monks. Most of the early settlers in the region were German-speaking Roman Catholics who had come from the United States. The community incorporated as a town on August 18, 1908.
